Extreme summer heat is welcome to some, but others – like the seniors in our community – view it as a burden, and even a danger. Physical exhaustion is a serious risk, and it’s not always easy for seniors on a fixed income to afford inflated air-conditioning bills.
Cool Zones Provide Welcome Relief to Local Seniors
For years now, The Salvation Army Sierra del Mar Division has responded to this problem by transforming each of its Senior Dining & Social Centers into a "Cool Zone." Seniors can stop in for a nutritious meal, fellowship with friends, and even a few fun activities such as bingo. It all takes place in a comfortable, temperature-controlled environment!
Friends, Food and Fellowship: Highlights from Cool Zone Participants
Whenever possible, The Salvation Army provides transportation to and from Cool Zones. Josephine, a program participant, is thankful because we "pick up the elderly from their home and take them to lunch, then back home again."
Cathy, a retired nurse and volunteer, says that without the program she would feel very lonely and wouldn’t know what to do with herself. "I would have nowhere to go," she says. "Helping people makes me feel good."
That’s what The Salvation Army is all about: helping people and Doing the Most Good in our community.
